People. Places. The story. From interviews to on-location footage, we help bring real stories into focus through documentary filming and thoughtful visual storytelling.

Find the story worth telling.
You might start with a person, a place, an event or a story you have wanted to tell for years. We work through what matters, who needs to be heard and what footage already exists. That gives the project a direction before we start filming.
More than an interview on camera.
Interviews give people room to tell their story in their own words. Location footage, details and the activity around them help show what they are talking about. We plan the camera, lighting and sound around the people and places involved so those pieces can work together in the finished film.
Build the story in the edit.
Editing brings the conversations and footage into a structure that makes sense. We choose the moments that support the story, use supporting images to connect them and work on sound and color as the piece develops. The goal is a film people can follow and connect with.
Make a practical filming plan.
Access, locations, schedules and the people involved all affect a documentary. Black Sparrow is based in North Port, with Sarasota and Southwest Florida locations discussed during planning. Share the subject, existing material and intended use so we can agree on filming and post-production needs.
Revisions and small fixes.
One full revision is included. Corrections for technical mistakes or things missed or overlooked in the editing process are included. Further creative changes and extended work are billed separately.
A few things to know.
Do I need a finished script?
No. You may have a developed idea or a subject you want to explore. Bring what you know and any existing interviews, photographs or footage, and we can discuss the direction.
Can you work with archive material?
We can discuss using existing material alongside new footage. Tell us what is available and make sure you have permission to use anything supplied for the project.

Preparing the shot
Behind the camera.
Before the take.
We work through camera placement, framing and the setup before filming starts. Preparing the shot gives us more time to focus on the people and the story when we roll.
